Supporting Young Artisans

Alpaca Scarf, Young Weaver Scarf, Nilson Sonqo

Threads of Peru is committed to being part of the preservation of the centuries old tradition of Andean weaving. An important aspect of this work is ensuring that younger generations learn, and value the craft of their parents and ancestors.

Apart from the intrinsic value of the weaving, one way that we can do this is by giving value to the art form through its marketability.

Introducing the Young Artisans Collection, a stunning baby alpaca scarf woven by Nilson Sonqo

We are delighted to present our first young artisan, Nilson Sonqo. The son of our featured Master Weaver, Daniel Sonqo, Nilson has been attentively learning the renowned skills of his father for many years, proudly contributing to the preservation of the ancient Quechua weaving tradition.

When encouraging young people to work, it must be done in addition to teaching them to value education. In Nilson’s case, his two older brothers are currently studying professional careers in the university in Cusco. Their parents, Daniel and Leonarda, are very proud and supportive of them, as they are the first people in their family to receive a tertiary education. Nilson intends to also study tourism in the university, while receiving a supplementary income from weaving!

A dedicated student, Nilson currently weaves from the comfort of his home in the high Andean community of Parobamba. When he has free time he practices all steps of the weaving process, from dyeing to spinning to weaving alpaca fiber. This year he has made a stunning naturally dyed baby alpaca scarf, featuring soft hues of purple, grey and mustard.

Threads of Peru is committed not only to providing sustainable economic solutions to rural poverty but also contributing to the preservation of traditional weaving in Peru. At such a young age, while also dedicating himself to studying and pursuing a professional career, Nilson is an inspiring example of these goals being realized!
