PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Sapa Wide Scarves, woven in gorgeous baby alpaca fiber, are stunning accessory items that will brighten up your wardrobe with a touch of Peru! Made by the community of Totora, in the Sacred Valley of Peru, these scarves were created using natural dye ingredients such as the cochineal insect (red) the kaka sunkha plant (brown) and kinsa kunchu (turquoise), as well as naturally occurring shades of alpaca fiber. They are perfect to accessorize with, worn dramatically wrapped, or even in a loosely draped shawl style.

The name "sapa" means ‘full of design’ in Quechua; this group of four scarves in the Quechua Collection feature the same weaving design in different, vibrant color combinations. The individual designs include ‘pica pica’ (Incan stairs) on the borders, and flowers and hearts in the central panel. In the Quechua storytelling tradition, the artisan's view of the world, including lakes, mountains, flowers, and Incan constructions, (all features of the natural environment), are represented in the weavings. The heart in the center of the weaving signifies the love that the weaver (and the wearer!) feel for the natural environment.

The K’ata Wide Alpaca Scarf collection contains some of our favorite products - luxurious, ample, and oh-so-soft! The rich shades of these baby alpaca scarves are made using ancient natural dyeing techniques - with the cochineal insect (crimson), once more valuable than gold, and the kinsa kunchu plant (turquoise) - as well as naturally occurring shades of alpaca fiber.

This alpaca scarf is a classic unisex piece that is perfect to combine with a thick sweater or elegant jacket. For women, it can be worn as a voluptuous thick scarf or an elegant shawl wrapped around the shoulders.

The name k’ata means ‘plain or without design’ in Quechua and refers to a group of four solid color scarves in the Quechua Collection that are classic, elegant fashion items created by ancient Andean techniques. The K’ata Wide Alpaca Scarves were handwoven by an indigenous artisan from the Sacred Valley community of Totora.

The Totora Master Weaver Scarves, woven in gorgeous baby alpaca, are stunning accessory items that will enrich your wardrobe with a touch of Peru!

Made by the community of Totora, in the Sacred Valley of Peru, these scarves were woven in only naturally occurring shades of baby alpaca fiber. The Totora Master Weaver Scarves feature designs like alpacas, owls, stars, Inca paths, and lakes. The designs are inspired by the natural world around the weaver, from which they draw their inspiration.

Over the years, these artisans have worked to refine the traditional spinning and weaving techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation since before Incan times, creating unique pieces of unsurpassable beauty. Some artisans boast the ability to hand-spin alpaca fiber almost as finely as machines!

The beautiful color combinations and intricate designs, carefully woven row by row on a traditional back strap loom, exemplify the skill and creativity of local Master Weaver Daniel Sonqo and his family.
