Handmade Artisan Peruvian Chuspa Alpaca Bag - 100% Naturally Dyed Fibers

Size: 30 cm x 30 cm

Fiber: 50% Alpaca/50% Wool

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This exquisitely handwoven cross-body bag, known as a chuspa in Quechua, is one of the most culturally rich pieces in the Quechua Collection. This South American style bag will be your favorite Latin accessory!

Featuring complex Quechua iconography and vibrant, organically dyed colors, the Awaq Chuspas represent thousands of year of Andean history and are still used today as carrying bags for necessities, like coca leaves.

The Awaq Chuspas were woven in the remote Andean community of Pitukiska, deep within the Mapacho River Valley of Cusco, using 100% natural fibers. The bags were sourced directly from the artisan at fair trade value. A remarkable feature of the chuspa is the fact that the central pocket is woven as a continuous piece of the bag, warped on the same loom. Very few artisans, even in the Cusco region, have the knowledge or skill to weave using this particular technique!

The Qolqe Change Purse is a stylish and unique way of storing your pocket change!

This unique Andean-style change purse in 4 fashionable color combinations was woven on a traditional back-strap loom by indigenous artisans from various Quechua communities in the Cusco region. The weaver created the ancient designs - including salla qocha (plants in the high Andean lakes) - by carefully selecting each thread, row by row.

The materials in this change purse are 100% natural – locally sourced sheep's wool, hand-spun on a drop-spindle, and dyed with natural dyes. This product is finished with cotton lining and a zipper closure.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Sapa Wide Scarves, woven in gorgeous baby alpaca fiber, are stunning accessory items that will brighten up your wardrobe with a touch of Peru! Made by the community of Totora, in the Sacred Valley of Peru, these scarves were created using natural dye ingredients such as the cochineal insect (red) the kaka sunkha plant (brown) and kinsa kunchu (turquoise), as well as naturally occurring shades of alpaca fiber. They are perfect to accessorize with, worn dramatically wrapped, or even in a loosely draped shawl style.

The name "sapa" means ‘full of design’ in Quechua; this group of four scarves in the Quechua Collection feature the same weaving design in different, vibrant color combinations. The individual designs include ‘pica pica’ (Incan stairs) on the borders, and flowers and hearts in the central panel. In the Quechua storytelling tradition, the artisan's view of the world, including lakes, mountains, flowers, and Incan constructions, (all features of the natural environment), are represented in the weavings. The heart in the center of the weaving signifies the love that the weaver (and the wearer!) feel for the natural environment.

PONCHO MENS - PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Spanish word “poncho” likely came from the Quechua word “punchu” or similar words in other languages spoken nearby. While other cultures to the North may have adopted this look (eg, the more famous Mexican Poncho!), a visit to the hills around Cusco and the Sacred Valley makes it abundantly clear that the poncho is as native to Peru as the alpaca.

This Poncho was inspired by the Gaucho cowboys of Argentina and also the striped Mexican Poncho... but  woven using traditional-style tightly woven, hand-spun alpaca wool, it suits even the coldest climates, after centuries of refinement in the harsh Andean highlands.

Who Made this South American Poncho?

This alpaca poncho was made in the high Andean village in the Patacancha valley at an altitude of over 4000m (13 123 feet) by an indigenous Quechua weaver who has been working with Threads of Peru since 2009.  All the women in these cooperatives recognise that their weaving ability has improved dramatically in these years, and are grateful to those that purchase their weavings.
