Hand-woven Peruvian Bedspread - 100% Alpaca Fiber and Natural Dyes

Size: 180 cm x 210 cm
Fibre: 100% Alpaca

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Mapacho Master Weaver Alpaca Bedspread was handwoven by the Sonqo family in the high Andean community of Parobamba and is an inspiringly beautiful example of traditional artisanship and mastery from the Mapacho River Valley of Cusco!

The beautiful color combination and intricate designs, carefully woven row by row on a traditional backstrap loom, demonstrate the skill and creativity of local Master Weaver Daniel Sonqo and his family. Over the years, the family has worked to refine the traditional weaving and dyeing techniques that have been passed down generation to generation since before Inca times, creating unique pieces of unsurpassable beauty.

The vibrant colors, hand-dyed using locally-sourced dye materials such as the cochineal insect (reds and purples), ch'illka (greens), and kinsa kunchu (turquoise), are representative of the Parobamba region on the edge of the Cusqueñan tropical rainforest. The pallay (design) features lakes, mountains, flowers, animals and Incan constructions, and showcases a cultural heritage centuries old.

Each Mapacho Master Weaver Alpaca Bedspread is unique, though very similar in design and color combination to those shown here. If desired, please contact our team for specific information and photos about items in stock. When listed as out of stock, this item is also available by custom order.

Master Weaver Collection: Traditional Handwoven Peruvian Manta – 100% Naturally Dyed Alpaca

Size: 80 cm x 80 cm (approx.)

Fibre: 100% Alpaca

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Daniel Master Weaver Peruvian Manta brings an exclusive opportunity to collect a masterpiece by the celebrated weaver, Daniel Sonqo!

Called lliqlla in Quechua, a manta is a traditional carrying cloth, used to carry a variety of items – from potatoes to firewood, to plants harvested for dyeing, and even babies! The greatest heights of artistic expression and technical accomplishment are showcased when weaving mantas, as this is the last stage of a weaver’s education.

Peruvian Mantas are traditionally worn over the shoulder by women, covering the back. They are first folded on the diagonal and joined by two corners under the chin with a large pin (traditionally called a tupu).

A true collector’s item, this piece will evoke the mystique of the ancient Incan empire. When listed as out of stock, the Daniel Master Weaver Peruvian Manta is also available by custom order.

Munay Wedding Table Runner

$275.00

Perfect Handmade Wedding Gift - 100% Alpaca Fiber and Natural Dyes

Size: 40 cm x 210 cm

Fiber: 100% Alpaca

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Munay Wedding Table Runner is the perfect wedding gift! These finely woven table runners feature traditional iconography symbolizing love and union, bringing the warmth of Andean history and love to any newlywed’s home.

The dusty rose shade is made from naturally dyeing with the cochineal insect, once more valuable than gold, and the soft cream is natural, un-dyed alpaca wool, locally sourced from the rolling mountains of the Cusco region.

As in many cultures across the globe and throughout the centuries, textiles play an important part in  traditional wedding rituals in the Andes. Not only are special garments prepared, sometimes months in advance, to adorn the bridal party; but textiles are also used as a form of dowry and a testimony to the bride-to-be’s weaving ability. In the Andes, special woven patterns and emblems have been developed to represent the loving union.

Hand-woven Peruvian Table Runner - 100% Baby Alpaca

Size: 40 cm x 210 cm

Fiber: 100% Baby Alpaca

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Pitusiray Master Table Runner is one of the finest examples of Quechua weaving in the Cusco region and will deliver the perfect touch of Latin American panache to your bedroom or dining room!

Woven by featured Master Weaver, Angela Milo Huallpa, from the high Andean community of Totora, the rich earth tones of this luxurious baby alpaca table runner come from the naturally occurring range of un-dyed alpaca fiber. The pallay (designs) of each runner are slightly different, reflecting the ever-changing inspirations of weaving, reflecting the natural environment, family stories, and the emotions of the weaver while working.

The Pitusiray Master Table Runner is a credit to the incomparable skill Angela has acquired through decades of practice. Her hand-spun yarn is actually considered to be as fine as machine spun! Carmen, her young daughter, is enthusiastically following in her mother's footsteps, already spinning and weaving awe-inspiring textiles of her own.

WHO MADE THIS TINKUY TURQUOISE WOOL FLOOR RUG?

This amazing handcrafted piece of artisanship was made b the Awaq Mayki (meaning handwoven in Quechua) weaving cooperative. Boasting over 20 talented and motivated members, Awaq Mayki partnered with Threads of Peru beginning in 2012 as an almost self-organized entity with over a decade registered as a formal association. The majority reside in the community of Upis, situated quite literally at the foot of the great Ausangate mountain, the highest in Southern Peru, and an important Apu (mountain god) in Quechua culture.
