Nawi Awapa Glasses Strap

$15.99

Hand-woven Peruvian Glasses Cord– 100% Naturally Dyed Wool

Size:

Fiber: 100% Wool

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is an funky, fresh and fair trade glasses strap that is bound to make a statement wherever you go.  You won't lose your specs when you go out with this great glasses cord that is both strong and durable, made of 100% wool.

This colorful sunglasses strap uses an ancient technique called ñawi awapa (eye border) which we have used as the name for these glasses cords.  Nawi Awapa is the crossed-warp tubular edging that’s applied to many of the Peruvian Chinchero textiles.

To explain further: Threads of Peru works with a range of Cusco region communities, but this special bordering technique only comes from one, Chinchero, made famous by Nilda Callanaupa who was featured in National Geographic magazine.

For weavers, this is further explanation of the "Eye Border" technique: its a complex braid with the cross threads held in place by the weft.

$119.00

Handmade Artisan Peruvian Chuspa Alpaca Bag - 100% Naturally Dyed Fibers

Size: 30 cm x 30 cm

Fiber: 50% Alpaca/50% Wool

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This exquisitely handwoven cross-body bag, known as a chuspa in Quechua, is one of the most culturally rich pieces in the Quechua Collection. This South American style bag will be your favorite Latin accessory!

Featuring complex Quechua iconography and vibrant, organically dyed colors, the Awaq Chuspas represent thousands of year of Andean history and are still used today as carrying bags for necessities, like coca leaves.

The Awaq Chuspas were woven in the remote Andean community of Pitukiska, deep within the Mapacho River Valley of Cusco, using 100% natural fibers. The bags were sourced directly from the artisan at fair trade value. A remarkable feature of the chuspa is the fact that the central pocket is woven as a continuous piece of the bag, warped on the same loom. Very few artisans, even in the Cusco region, have the knowledge or skill to weave using this particular technique!
